All tech people should be forced to test their fancy new software on 5-year-old hardware with a rural internet connection.
For anyone else on @dev@microblog.pub/microblog.pub who wants to use a twitter fediverse look-up app that works if you don't have a Mastodon account, Debirdify does the trick! Movetodon unfortunately does not (requires that you have an account on a service that implements the Mastodon auth API).

Update: moved this to my new writing site so there’s a new URL.
Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case. I wrote this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags based on their case.
It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

No power = time to read (I have an eink reader with a backlight and a mostly full battery)
Finished Use of Weapons earlier, gonna start University of the Underworld now.
(Should have power again tomorrow, and it's not too cold, so I'm fine for now. I've got places I can go if I have to but I don't want to stuff the cats in the carrier if I can avoid it)

How do I get an android web browser to think it's on a computer? I'm trying to get a school app to work on my daughter's tablet. Used to work in the desktop version of chrome but they disabled that, and the actual app isn't available for android.

The same goes for domain names; do NOT use a public domain name you do not control in your configuration, documentation, or UI language.
Instead, use one of the available reserved domain names documented in RFC 2606, such as 'example.com', 'example.net', or the .example top-level domain.

Pass it on to your fellow developers, designers, documentation writers, and so forth.

You might think it would be fairly simple to 1) determine if a computer-generated USPS customs form doubles as an address label or 2) find a simple quarter-page from/to address label template, but you would be wrong.
Clearly I'm going to end up having to design my own in Scribus or something but that is a problem for tomorrow-me.
