<12 hours till I can read this year's #Yuletide stories! https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/ I am jazzed with anticipation.
If a large subset of the people in a defederated social network want quote tweeting they should be able to get quote tweeting, and the level of friction and discourse this simple desire is causing indicates a huge blindspot and failure of the ecosystem (or, charitably said, "area for improvement").
"But QT is an abuse vector" ok but that doesn't actually matter here. A federated ecosystem where something like this can be ""held hostage"" by the opinion of a few developers and communities, despite entire other communities demanding it (wrong or right), has a lot of work to do to live up to the promise of decentralized network. This doesn't mean that mastodon developers should be forced to implement it, but it does mean that there's a failure mode that's happening for whatever reason that shouldn't really be happening. There's just no way around this.

New post:
https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2022/speech-to-text-with-whisper-how-i-use-it-why/
I've started regularly using OpenAI's #Whisper to make transcripts and captions/subtitles, and am writing to share how, and why, and my reflections on the ethics of using it.
A lot of HOWTO in here, but the last section dives into @simon's #ML #machinelearning #AI vegan analogy in a way you might find interesting even if Whisper isn't your thing.
Posting this again. Please boost if you know someone.
I have a fediverse server written in Python/Django called kepi. It works, but I had to give up on further development because I can't do a web UI myself and nobody was helping.
But! I would really like to split three of the parts off into separate libraries:
- bowler: handles incoming ActivityPub messages
- trilby: handles the Mastodon protocol
- sombrero: sends ActivityPub
Would you use them? Can you help me with them?
Hoping we see more work on single-user #fediverse software, particularly stuff that's easy to install and resource-light. People are all 'run your own instance!' but at the moment that's non-trivial, even for someone with admin experience. There's a reason Wordpress dominates blogging, and it's not because it's good - it's because it's easy.

Lots of important things depend on volunteer labor - local #civic groups, #opensource software projects, and more.
But maybe you are getting #burnout from trying to do too much.
Every #solstice, take inventory of your #volunteering responsibilities.
Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day is about checking with yourself, and ending the commitments you need to end – maybe by taking a break, or by rotating it on to someone else, or by sunsetting a project.

Final polished version of my Yuletide assignment is posted! FWIW the 'Docs to Markdown' extension in Google Docs has an HTML version and it's very convenient to use.
Cory Doctorow reminded me that January 1, 2023 is Public Domain Day (observed), and this year we get a plethora of awesome ...
including METROPOLIS.
oh I think I'm going to have fun.
Hm, fandom.ink avatars have just... stopped loading locally for me. I thought maybe I had just cached some bad versions from people there I actually follow, but I just saw a share with a bad one, too. Will have to poke at logs when I have energy, I guess.
New idea: all of 2023 is a nice big nap for everyone, and we regroup in 2024
Have realized I've reached the stage in my life where what I actually want for Christmas is someone to come over and clean my house for me....
"app" is short for "appalling"
All the little muscles at the back of my neck fuck right off right now, seriously x.x
Reminder that I collect weird, whacky, and bizarre form fields related to gender collection at https://genders.wtf and would welcome people submitting more
Another day in which I am mad that TGCF has a seperate fandom tag for every adaptation while all of Jojo's Bizarre Adventures is under a single fandom tag.
(TGCF has no real deviations from the original novel in adaptations, while every JJBA arc has a new plot and cast of characters - to the point where the most recent few arcs aren't even in the same universe - and also has a number of alternate timelines in light novels and video games)
Catch me grumpily coding keyword muting into microblog because Twitter broke it and I'm mad.
Discovered I did a big chunk of this (very complicated) crosstitch pattern off by ten squares, sigh. I think this is the point where I buy some larger weave and start over again, because the size I have been trying to do this at is not helping me.
(the pattern has shading and about 30 different colors, so redoing this section involves redoing about ten different colors)
Here we go. As promised. A #selfie #photography #MasterClass with many examples and technical guidance. Especially good for #trans folks as well:
